 | How do I automatically keep cookies which have passwords and delete cookies which track my page views?
Jane
==============
Here is my situation in more detail.
I have exclusive access to my PC and I am prepared to store cookies which have got my password in so that I can revisit websites without having to sign in.
Opera's wand does something like this. But if I make input errors when using the Wand then it is messy to later edit the Wand entries. So, for me, the Wand does always really replace password cookies.
MY QUESTION IS ... how do I set up Opera to automatically keep those cookies which have passwords and get rid of those cookies which only serve to track the page I view?
I have tried various settings in Preferences > Privacy but there are some unexpected quirks there and I am having trouble getting the result I want.
[One quirk I have observed is that "Delete New Cookies When Exiting Opera" does not seem to work on the current session of Opera but works for the subsequent session. It seems as if Opera only reads these settings when it launches. This means that a change of settings does not get picked up by Opera until the next time it is launched.]

Can't help you on distinguishing cookies, but maybe I can make sense of "Delete new cookies" for you ...
There are two types of cookies, session cookies and ... well, I guess I'll call them "normal" cookies. When you visit (for example) a shopping site or a library site and do a search, the site will use a session cookie to remember your search. You're not actually logged in so they can't erase the cookie when you leave - especially if you leave by clicking on a bookmark or closing the page. Session cookies are automatically erased when you close the browser, no reason to worry about filling up your hard drive with lots of searches on different sites. Normal cookies instead have a time limit, they are saved until the time limit expires.
When you check "Delete new cookies on exit", what happens is that all of the new cookies are made as session cookies. But it is not retroactive - any normal cookies you got before checking the box are still normal cookies. Similarly all cookies that you'd get before unchecking the box are session cookies, Opera has no way to convert some of them to normal cookies.
I can't say whether Opera waits until you restart before the setting takes effect, though I don't think so. I think it is immediate, and you could even turn it on before going to a particular site and then turn it back off when you leave that site and only the cookies you received from that site (and of course all the regular session cookies) would be discarded. If that is the case, then I think some people would probably like to have it as a button rather than buried in Preferences ...

Is it possible to use Manage Cookies in Opera and to make cookies which are defines as session cookies into permanent cookies (and vice versa)?

Not that I know of. Maybe by changing the expiration, but I'm not certain.
