 | I am trying to view a .wmv file in a mms:// link in a web page.
I have Windows Media Player 2, ver 6.4.
I can save and paste the link and open the file in Media Player 2 directly with no problem.
I can open the run box, key in mplayer2 and paste the link and it works fine too.
However, when I follow earlier posts here to add .mms protocol, I go to preferences, programs and paths, add mms as a new protocol to be opened with media player 2. But when I click on the link, I get a message saying the address type is unknown or unsupported. The error dialog box includes three square boxes followed by the mms:// wmv file reference.
Does anyone know what I am missing here?

Got a URL?
Regardless, here's some things to check:
- Try wmplayer.exe, not mplayer2.exe - Ensure your web proxy or personal firewall is not altering the feed. - If you're using Opera 7.11 or earlier, try adding this...
TrustedExternalURLProtocols=mms
...to the [User Prefs] section of your profile\opera6.ini file.

I don't have wmplayer.exe.

I turned both off and got the same result.

My Opera is 7.52.

I have done some more work on the problem.
I looked in the hkey_classes_root, and noticed a number of entries for http, including Opera for the open command.
I looked at mms in hkey_classes_root. It looked sparse, not even an open command. I noted a number of file types in the extensions subkey in http with GUIDs for something. There wasn't even an extension subkey for mms.
I tried putting in mplayer2 for the open command. That didn't do anything when I tried to open the link through the run box. I got a message about no program being associated with the .wmv extension even though it is.
I tried just saying mms:// in the run box without a file name. I got the same message that I got with the link.
I tried just http:// with no link. Opera opened with a message about not file.
Conclusion. It looks like something is missing in the mms specification in Windows. What is it?

Works for me in both Opera 7.54 and 8.0pr1, WinXP SP2.

It should be in the same folder as mplayer2.exe. Are you sure you installed the Windows Media Player correctly?

I suspect your registry analysis below yields some clues...

Personally, I'd reinstall the Windows Media Player. FWIW, I'm using WiMP 10 here.
Here's the info that I exported from my HKCR\MMS registry key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS] "Source Filter"="{6B6D0800-9ADA-11d0-A520-00A0D10129C0}" "Animation"="dxmasf.dll,150" "URL Protocol"="" @="URL:mms Protocol"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe,-120"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\shell]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\shell\open]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MMS\shell\open\command] @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player\\wmplayer.exe\" \"%L\""

Reinstalling WMP 6.4 did something, it wasn't evident what, but it worked.
I don't know when I installed wmplayer. I couldn't find a download file. It may have been in my original Win 98 SE installation.
To reinstall, I downloaded a version from the Microsoft Media Player download page. I installed that version, which worked. I then noted that some modules that I had on my system were later than those in the download.
Module On my system On download file
laprxy.dll 4.1.00.3925 3.0.0.2700
logagent.exe 4.1.00.3925 3.0.0.2700
mplayer2.exe 6.4.07.1121 6.04.07.1112
npwmsdrm.dll 4.1.00.3858 4.1.00.3857
I suspect that my later modules could have come form Windows Update. Thinking that the later modules might have some important security related fixes, I replaced those modules that I had downloaded with those that I had. They worked without any apparent problem.
The reinstall did not add a mplayer.exe. That may be a post WMP 6.4 change.
After the reinstall, entering mms:// in the run box opened up WMP. That was a change.
It looks like the reinstall did something in Window, maybe an updated module or some change in the registry. The download was in an .exe file, and I don't how to see inside self extracting .exe file.
Thanks for all help.

Select Tools-->Preferences-->Programs and paths, then under Protocols, select Add, in the Protocol box, put mms, in the Open with other application box, click choose and select Mplayer2.exe
