 | My Mail folder is fast approaching 0.5GB and has messages as far back as 1998. I'd like to archive all then reduce the active Mail contents to messages from January 1, 2004 to today (or some other culling scheme).
Any suggestions on methods for reducing size of active message store and archiving earlier messages?

In Mozilla products inside the profile folder there is a folder called mail.
Inside that are two files for each folder or directory for example one called inbox amd inbox.msf
when I ant to save an entire mailbox full of mail I make a copy of the file called inbox (not inbox.msf) then (being a mac user) I use either Stuffit format or ZIP format to archive the copy and save to another location. Since the file to begin with is Text format, it can read by any ASCII editor.
Then I go back in that folder directory after reopening the application and delete all the messages and compact the file (Moz products call it a file)
Doesn't opera have a similar format. Oh Mozilla products use UNIX mbox format.

Opera 7.5 and higher store all messages sent in received in a mbs file for each account for each month. See \store\ . You could move these, archive them, etc. It requires a complete reindex to make Opera forget about them though. This is because Opera indexes all messages, giving you a lightning fast search capability. If you archive older mail by simply removing older mbs files, searches will can still 'find' the old messages, though you'll only see empty lines.

 | Rijk,
I seed the Store folder. I also see a Storage folder with mboxXX.mbs files, the most recently updated one was updated in February 2004.
Is that a legacy folder?
Can it be deleted?

Yes, that is pre-7.5 legacy. Only the directories 'store', 'indexer', 'lexicon and' 'autofilter' are used since 7.5. And various files in the 'mail' directory of course.
