 | Considering how user-friendly Opera is, this one item actually bothers me.
If you have a mailing list or newsgroup view open in the mail and click the Compose button, it automatically puts the list or group name in for you. Yet if you right-click on the view in the panel and select Compose from the menu, you get a generic Compose window (that is, with no To: or group name filled in for you).
Haven't checked on contact views, obviously they should fill in the To for you. Not sure about a thread view, replying to a thread is somewhat more complex - as in, where in the thread would the message go? Sounds like an interesting idea except for that problem ...

I agree.

Contact view appears to work. I don't know what do you mean by "thread view".

Just speculating: if you select Compose on an active thread, ideally the message you compose should be in that active thread view. But given the method Opera uses to determine threading, that would be too ambiguous - which of several messages in that view would you assign as the parent?

In threading, you should press "reply" button. This works very well (at least in newsgroups, never tried in mailing lists).
