Hello,

I'm using X in two-head configuration: one screen is on the local
machine, second one is forwarded to the notebook. It's a real pain of
having two Operas started on the one machine, one showing the windows
to the one screen, another one to the another (especially because
Opera love to replace configuration files at home directory without
warning, which is also annoying). Is it possible to add 'Open window
on display ...' feature? Emacs does it gracefully and I don't think
it's too hard to implement.

How does your display manager handle the second display?

Of course, you should be able to use "Execute command" to handle it. Not
that I'm that proficient in Linux, but if a terminal can open a Linux
window in the second screen then you should be able to use the same
command from Opera.

Why do you need to have two Operas running? Normally you get a second
window but the same Opera program running both, as you can verify with the
Windows panel. (The Windows panel shows all open windows for this copy of
Opera and all pages open in those windows.)

If I'm get this right, you cannot have two Opera windows (coming from
the same *process*) on showing on two different X displays. I don't know
if his setup includes Xinerama and if it shares the same $DISPLAY
variable between displays, like a dual-head card would allow you.

I ranted a little about this on my previous post; basically, you don't
want your [dangerous] casual browsing to threaten your
"please-don't-crash-while-I'm-testing-something-painful" other window :)

I kind of solved this with several profiles under
~/.operaprofiles/ and a tiny zenity script that lets me
select which one to load each time. I share lot of stuff (via
symlinking) between them, so changes in (say) keyboard shortcuts in one
profile are available on the others.

I do use several windows from one Opera process, but for the different
projects I work in, I don't want my casual browsing to take them down
when a crash occurs (not unlikely lately), or even having to close and
reopen all of them because of memory hogging.

(X)Emacs is the only program I can remeber right now that has this
(exceptional and utterly useful) feature (oh, well, there was some kind
of shareable drawing board too, very experimental and hidden in some
lab's obscure ftp directory :).

For what I've tried, Opera relies on sharing the same $DISPLAY with a
running instance to get a new window from it.

So yes, I guess this would be a valid (and useful) wish :)
