 | Thinking about competing in the deadly sport of adventure racing. How often does something like this happen? http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/192076_adventuredeath23.html What was the mistake, or is it a roll of the dice?

Trundling rocks is actually pretty common - on the easier routes that attract masses of inexperienced people. Take a bunch of such inexperienced, gung-ho and in-a-hurry people all racing each other down a mountain - I can definitely see a situation I personally would not want to be near. Why "adventure" racing? These races sound just as and unrefined as those "ultimate man" contests. The only difference I see is a yuppie target instead of going for the Budweiser crowd - ie, the sponsors probably do a little better financially. There are plenty of high quality trail run races out there that might be a little more tolerable. Breathing hard at 13k on some jeep road is enough competitive excitement for me. Save the mountaineering and such for something that is actually hard.
