Hello,
I am interested in finding an AR15 carbine in 9mm. Used (in good
condition) or new, an actual Colt or a clone doesn't really matter. I
do want something that is affordable ($400-600) and reliable. What
should I be looking at, as I haven't found much online yet. I live in
Michigan, which doesn't have any "assault weapon" ban in place, so that
isn't a problem. This would primarily be for target practice, and I am
interested in the 9mm instead of the 5.56mm because I cannot shoot
rifle ammunition at my local range. Pistol ammunition in rifles is
fine. Thanks in advance.
Mike Owens.

LOTS of uppers always in Shotgun News - with lots of companies selling them.
If you have an AR already, just get an upper; if not, you'll always find
someone at the area shows wanting to sell his AR (.223 version).

If it's just for practice why not get a .22lr conversion, much cheaper
to buy and shoot.

You aren't going to find any AR 9mm carbines in your price range. Colt 9mm
carbines usually run over $1,300. You can order a new one from Oly ($834.)
They also have one that now takes Glock mags, which sounds quite
interesting. Rock River Arms makes a 9mm upper complete for $425, so you
could add it to a lower. You can get complete lowers from RRA for $275 plus
the magazine conversion block for $150, so your total for a RRA 9mm carbine
would be $850. You can also buy a stripped lower from other makers for
$100, plus a lower parts kit ($50) and a telestock ($70) for a total of
$220, bringing your total cost down around $800 (without shipping for
transfer fees.) I don't know where to find cheaper magazine conversion
blocks, but they might be available for $100.

Either way, I seriously doubt you are going to find an AR 9mm carbine in
your price range. Also, magazines tend to be $30 or more, even with the AWB
gone....

As much as I love ARs (especially if equiped with the gas-piston by Kurt or
H/K), if I wanted a carbine to shoot 9mms... I'd just get a Ruger PC-9 or
Beretta Cx4.
