For a new .22LR/.22 WMR Ruger Hunter Single Six revolver with a 7.5
barrel, what ammo brands and models would you recommend trying in order
to establish benchmarks?

The goal is best accuracy at 25 to 50 yards.

Thanks!

Start with CCI Mini Mag. I have a Single6 6.5 barrel and have enjoyed that
handgun for 25 years or more. But you need to take $20 to any sports goods
store and get several boxes of different ammo and try them out. So far, how do
you like the Hunter Single6 ?

Harry, For some reason each firearm is a rule unto itself when it comes
to what ammunition it likes and dislikes. I recommend you try the
inexpensive stuff first before testing the high priced spread. If
you're lucky you'll find an accurate brand that costs less per brick
than some match grade stuff does per box. That said I usually have
good luck with CCI Mini-Mag 22 long rifle ammunition. Lately (with the
exception of selfloaders in the cold) more guns than not - including a
Bisley Single-Six - like the Federal 36 grain HP 550 for $9 bulk pack
from Walmart; go figure. Good hunting! Michael

Try Federal GOLD MEDAL 22 LR TARGET-SUBSONIC and Eley Target Pistol
Ammunition

You should also try one box of each of the common ammo types available
locally - it is quite possible that one of them may outshoot the more
expensive target ammo listed above in your particular gun.

Thanks...out of curiosity, would a decent .22LR wheel gun with a 7.5"
barrel be any less accurate than, say, a decent .22LR semi-auto with a
similar length barrel? I realize that the aiming of the wheel gun might
be more difficult to repeat while handholding, but otherwise, wouldn't
they shoot about the same?

That's a good question,In theory "they" say an auto loader "should" be
more accurate due to the elimination of the bullet not having to jump
from a cylinder to the forcing cone like in a revolver however if I
compare my Single Six with my Browning Buckmark, using identical rounds
the S.S. wins hands down. Not exactly a scientific conclusion by any
stretch and other factors may play a part but still a fly in the
ointment to the theory.

P.S.My Single Six loves the cheap Winchester bulk ammo the best,go
figure
