I called Military gun supply and was set to order the un issued SKS but they
told me all they have left are the un issued ones with a few dings and dents.
So i called J&G sales and asked about their un issued ones and they said as
fasr as they know they all look new and were not issued. They were test fired
every so offten they think and i asked about dings and dents and was told yes
some may have a few dings and sents.

Are we talking about the same grade gun between both sellers? Cause one is 20
bucks less then the other. Has anyone gotten a few dings and dents from
Military gun supply at 129.00 for the un issued and how bad was it? I was told
they are not too bad but do have dings and dents.

Any advice you owners of recently bought SKS's would be appreciated.

I bought a truly "unissued SKS a couple of years ago. Yet, even though the
metal was pristine (until I disassembled it -- then one of the latch levers
left a scratch on the receiver cover!). But there was one four inch long,
3/8 inch wide scrape on the right side of the otherwise beautiful teak
stock. After 50 years in military storage I figured I did pretty well --
and it shoots fine, too!

Do yourself a favor and browse your area's shows for one - where you can see
it. Mil-surplus guns come in a wide variety of conditions - from near-pristine
to cosmetically hopeless.

All the Yugo SKS' are ex-military guns, and none of them will be like
a NIB commercial firearm. They were warehoused, cosmo'd, cleaned,
test-fired, moved around, stacked up, boxed and unboxed, and on and
on, in no particular order.

The only way I know of to get one with no dings and dents is to
hand-pick through a pile of them and get lucky. Even in the
"unissued" grade, there's a ton of variation in the ones I've seen,
including the occasional stock repair.

Guns in storage will get storage marks on them but I would be suspicious of
dents and dings. Does not sound right to me.

Get an unisued one from somebody else. There are too many online retailers
to choose from to get vamboozled by only one.

I would trust the big sellers SOG or AIM etc.

I bought one about a year ago for around the $140 range and the stock was
still full of cosmoline. I wrapped the stock in a towel and left it out in
the sun for a few days. Once most of the cosmoline was removed I "steamed"
the stock over a lobster pot of boiling water and then hung the stock to
dry. After a week or so I lightly sanded the stock and all the bumps dents
and dings where gone. I've heard of soaking the stock in a tub then letting
it air dry but that seems a little risky if you are going to want to oil the
stock after your done. Suppose if you own a sauna to hang the stock in your
golden but if not how long will it need to hang before it is dried out?
