 | I've added an article describing, illustrating and providing data on all of the ammunition used in service anti-tank rifles (and some experimental ones too).

 | It is an obsolete concept on tanks. It wouldn't make much of an impact on a lot of the APCs today either. They would ruin most regular vehicles though. They would make a hell of an anti-materiel rifle. Speaking of which, I found this: http://club.guns.ru/eng/ntw20.html

 | While it ( the original anti-tank gun) may be obsolete for its original purpose, isn't the fairly popular Barrett 50 cal just a new take on the old Boyes 50 cal anti-tank gun?

 | One interesting field of research may be the "dance" between thicker armor and bigger guns, both in naval warfare, and in tanks. In tanks, which started with rivited armor, which worked until other tank guns got bigger, and then went to cast armor, then welded armor, then thicker cast armor, and finally, as of now layered welded armor, based on a British patent to Cobham for layered armor. The US version of this substitutes depleted uranium for lead, and the layer thicknesses are both obvious and classified.
Sometimes along in that process, an anti tank rifle would penetrate a tank hull or turret. Still, it would not tickle. I am informed that if an RPG hits an M1 tank turret on both sides at the same time, the crew's ears will bleed for a while. No damage done to the tank, though.
If one does that often enough, the tank will surrender. The hard part is getting close enough and staying alive long enough to do it. On average, it has been calculated that 12 LAW hits will disable a tank.
One-shot stop needs another tank to do. Many shot stops are possible with other approaches.

They were mainly used before World War II when tanks armor was resistant to small-arms fire, but was vulnerable to higher-powered shots.
When heavier armor became more common, anti-tank rifles were rapidly made obsolete.

Depends on the gun, depends on the tank.
Most early WW2 tanks had quite thin armour which could be penetrated by the ATRs. As the war proceeded, tank armour thickened up and the ATRs gradually became ineffective. However, the Russian 14.5mm (the best of them) could penetrate 40mm armour at close range, which was enough to be a threat to the side armour of many tanks or other armoured vehicles well into the war, so the Russians practiced ambush techniques. I don't think anyone would want to sell you insurance if you had that job, though.

I wonder what a 20mm AT rifle with *modernized* ammo would do to today's APCs and IFVs. I suppose rifling would have to be changed to achieve higher velocities.
