Rec.guns,

I've heard in passing that some guns fire from an open bolt. The firing
sequence would be:

1) pull trigger
2) bolt moves forward, stripes a round and chambers it
3) firing pin sets the round off
4) bolt moves back, extracting the case and cocking the firing mechanism
5) bolt locks in the open position

One nice thing about this mechanism is that it would eliminate the need to
chamber a round. Insert a loaded magazine and you're good to go. Also, in
terms of safety, once the magazine is out, the gun is unloaded, no need to
check the chamber (unless it malfunctioned).

I can't think of any modern weapons that do this. Did this idea never get
off the production floor?

What are some examples of these weapons?
