I listen to people expounding the virtues of their favorite deer
cartridge and how it is the best ever invented. The truth be told there
is only a few classes of deer cartridges and within the class there
isn't a nickels worth of difference between them.
First is the .30/30 class it includes stuff like .30/30, .303Savage
if you can find any, .35 Remington, and recently the 7,62x39mm. these
are 200 yard cartridges, sighted in at 150 yards the all drop around 4
inches at 200 yards and have minimally enough umph for deer at that
range.
Second is the .30/06 class, this includes all the cartridges like 7mm
mauser, .308, .280 Rem, .270 Win, .260 and such. They are generally 300
yard rounds for most hunters, sighted in at 200 yards all drop between 6
and 8 inches at that distance and have plenty of power for it or even
further, if you can shoot good enough from field positions, which
most hunters can't.
Then there is the real long range rounds which most guys can't use and
don't need like the 7mm Mags and big .300s, they cost a lot, kick quit a
bit and rattle windows, but can be used very well out to at least 400
yards by the rare shooter who from field positions can shoot them well
enough at that distance.
Most casual hunters should stick with the .30/06, 7mm Mauser class,
sight in at 200 yards, remember the long range drop and go hunting.
If you can afford two deer rifles you will probably like the .30/30,
they are slim, nice to carry and shoot, and for most hunting are pretty
good, if you can't stick with the mid class like the 06 or 7 Mauser
range of cartridge.
