Just curious if anyone has ever compared the two, with 300gr bullets.
To me, looks like a toss up in the real world. I guess you could argue
the sec. density advantage of the 405, however slight. But you could
also argue the larger diameter of the .429 however slight.
With well designed 300gr slugs, or better yet solids, they should be
darn near interchangable.
I think both cartridges' performance data is documented in various
handloading rags with 24" barrels.
In the real world, the typical 22" 444 barrel would be 120 or so fps
slower, but you think you could make up most of that with some
"souping".
Still seems like a toss up, I could be wrong.

Keep in mind that the recent re-introduction of the .405 Win may be
short-lived. Ammo availability may be become a problem in the near
future. The .444 is far more likely to be around for a long time, and
there is a wider range of bullets available for it.
I think you made the right choice.

You are more likely to get a .405 with the proper twist to handle 300
and up grain bullets. In addition, if you can soup up the .444, you can
boost the .405 too. I would give a effective range edge to the .405,
but it is not large. Now if you have a .444, I see no reason to go the
...405 unless you want to. Much the same could be said for .45-70 and
...450 Marlin vs. .444 as all are similar enough in performance that one
should not covet the other. .405 has a storied history behind it as an
African gun and is probably the most powerful lever action round
developed. That gives it a uniqueness that some people, like me, want.
My .405 is a T/C Encore custom barrel and it is great fun to shoot.
