 | OK, I want a muzzleloader with the fast twist of today's modern muzzleloading rifles with the look of yesteryear's rifleslike the Hawken or Kentucky. I would use this for deer hunting in Ohio (sabots preferred). Any ideas?

David, The Lyman Great Plains Rifle (a Hawken style) can be had with an optional 1:32 barrel. Their Trade Rifle has a 1:48 twist which is a good for bore diameter conicals but a comprimise for roundball or sabots http://www.lymanproducts.com/lymanproducts/rifles.htm Dixie sells an Early American Jaeger (pre-"Kentucky" so to speak) with a 1:28 barrel. Their website is a mess but here is the front door http://www.dixiegun.com/ Good hunting! Michael

David,
There's a number of fine Hawken replica rifles out there that will shoot sabots well. The rifle that you should look for will have a twist rate for the barrel of 1:48 or less. 1:66 works for patched round balls, 1:48 will work with either pretty good and faster twists will stabilize a sabotted bullet for decent flight.
There's a number of good rifles out there. I have a Thompson Center .50 caliber Grey Hawk that I recently acquired and a Traditions .54 caliber Hawken replica. Both shoot well. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com
