Hi.I recently acquired a Savage .300 "Model 99" in nearly perfect
condition. It has a side mount for a scope but no scope could be found
for the piece. The mount is a "Pachmayr" brand.
Are these scopes available today or should I just remove the mount and
start over?
I tried to sight-in the open sights but could barely keep the pattern
on the target. The old peepers just ain't what they used to be!!
Thanks n advance....Brian O.

Brian, Pachmayr was a manufacturer of bases and rings
(long before they started making their rubber grips
for revolvers). The scope would have been by another
manufacturer. Unless your Savage is also drilled and
tapped for conventional top mounts I'd try to make use
of the existing mount. Removing the side mount will
uncover several mounting holes which will need plug
screws. If your mount does not have the rings with it
you may have some webcrawling to do. A quick Google
of the terms < pachmayr side mount base rings > will
refer you to Ebay, Gun Parts Corp, Sarco, and
Gunsamerica. Good hunting! Michael

If it's for hunting, I'd put a good-quality fixed 4x scope on there, or a
Burris 2x7 Compact variable. If it's for target shooting, I still would not
put bigger than a 3x9 on a .300 Savage. Make sure you mount the scope as low
as possible!
