Hi, I have an old Stevens Model 311 16 guage side by side. I really enjoy
duck hunting and would to be able to shoot steel shot through this gun. Is
it safe to shoot steel shot through this old of a gun. Any replies would be
greatly appreciated.

NO!....I have a buddy with that exact gun, and steel is NOT safe in that
gun. The only thing that is safe is bithmuth.

It depends on the choke. If it is full choke, you better stick to
bismuth or composites, like tungsten/poly, that are safe for all nitro
proofed barrels. If the choke is I/C/Mod, I would say go for it. I
have a 12 gauge 311 that must have started life as somebody's skeet
cannon. I can't figure out if one of the barrels has a choke or not,
the other doesn't have much of one. It's a fun 30 yard decoy gun
shooting cheap steel, and I have even taken geese with it, using
Hevishot. The barrel shows no sign of damage.

The problem with most old shotguns and steel is that old full choke.
The 311 has plenty of muzzle thickness to inlet variable choke tubes,
but the shotgun is just not financially worth it. A careless choke job
will ruin the collimation and turn a niceshooting old double into a
pile of junk.

I wouldn't do it if I were you. I had an old shotgun that I used steel shot
in and ended up with the barrel ruined. You could run your hand down the
barrel and feel a bulge just before the choke area.

You could always take it to a competant gunsmith for a final determination,
but I wouldn't risk it.
