A Thompson Contender is a single shot, break action pistol that is very accurate and quite strong in its design. There are interchangable barrels that enable a shooter to go beyond the limits of conventional pistol ammunition and shoot calibers that were typically thought of as only available in rifles.
Examples of this would be .308 and 45/70 rifle cartridges, now shot through a pistol! Here's a link,

I agree with you. I was living in Alaska up until about 5 years ago. The guy I worked for thought those revolvers we had might make fair bear protection. They didn't sell. Anybody that has much Alaska experience isn't going to pack only a handgun for bear protection. We even chronographed one of the things when we had some in the showcase about 10 years ago. when they were fired, lots of fire and smoke, but velocity was around 500 fps below what we got out of an 18" Marlin with the same load. Too damn much iron in one of them for for me to pack around and recoil was a bitch. John

No the Contender is not suitable for the 308 win and the 45-70 is marginal. I traded my 45-70 barrel because except with level 1 loads you risk frame stretch.
You might be referring to the Encore? Much stronger but larger than the Contender.

My comment has little to do with TC Contender, but an interesting aside is the .45-70 has been available in a revolver for several years. I can't remember the brand name of the two we had in the showcase about 10 years ago, but here's a company presently making that caliber, and a few other large caliber revolvers.

But notice the ballistics are not as good as a 454. Recoil factor is lower, but the gun weighs 33% more and does not push the bullet as fast (with factory loads). They did imply it was ok to load a little hotter and you can safely do that in a Contender too but that big 45-70 case head loaded hotter runs the risk of stretching the frame in the Contender
Interesting novelty but don't think I want one. Might be interesting for shot shells though. You could get a lot of shot in that big case.
