Hello jugglers all,

The World Juggling Federation posted a trailer promoting the festival in
the fall that was pretty funny and weird, narrated by Penn Gillette. I
need to see it again to show it to unbelieving friends ("Penn Gillette?
Juggling? No-oo!") but appear to have deleted it from my hard drive. And
it is not available on the WJF site anymore.

Does anyone have a copy mirrored on a website somewhere?

Many thanks in advance,

Chuckles the Ambidextrous Clown

Oh, my apologies... I had two trailers, and remembered his one as being
the larger of the two. I guess there was a third one that I didn't have.
Anyway, looks like Mutton had it instead!

Thanks too kindly for posting the trailer, everybody! Too much fun.

I remember when I first read through a list of unix commands, I wondered
what that one was (as the glossary I was reading said something along
the lines of "I don't know what this does..."), now I know...

Try searching for "Dick Franco", as that is his name.

That would probably because of my inability to correctly spell his name.

Try looking for "Dick Franco" There is plenty there, but it seemed
to start with a thread in 1997 where he posted a picture of a statue
that he saw on holiday.

Unfortunately, the jugglingdb.com archive of that period seems to be
a little ropey. try the www.google.com group search instead.

:-/

Unfortunately JT2 is going to be delayed a bit more. Certainly until next
month now, mostly because of events in my personal life meaning that
I don't have the time needed to finish planning it.

ropey ... ROPEY? That's a slanderous statement.

If you type DIck Franco into the author field of the IJDb rec.juggling
advanced search form (which looks very like the Google advanced groups
search ;-) you get 50 messages back, including all of his holiday snaps.

I tried to compare this to the results from a search via Google, however
the firewall at work objected to a search for 'Dick'.

Well, a number of the images I found were truncated causing problems
when it comes to decoding them, and some of the threads didn't seem
link up properly (missing parent posts, threading problems etc)

Still, considering the source of the data for that period I guess we're
lucky to have it at all! ;-)

Mind you, when it comes to searching for the binaries themselves rather
than just the threads surrounding them, google lets us down a bit as
it doesn't seem to have them archived.

I guess that's par for the course when dealing with data that was archived
8 years ago :-)

A better search for Dicks binaries would be http://tinyurl.com/4mnau

I'm working my way through decoding the complete ones, just as a way of
avoiding having to work out how to optimise a rather slow query to one
of my databases (17 seconds to return a 1 field result... eeew!)

That's a little harsh. I'm certainly "clued up" enough to use a
newsreader, but it's impractical at work, and my local newsserver is
unreliable. jugglingdb.com also lets you click siteswaps (although
that itself is unreliable). Google groups seems the best compromise
for now.
I'm probably reading too much into your footnote though aren't I :)

Fair enough... It's funny, I've read the FAQ a few times actually (or
maybe I'm just thinking of the IJDb FAQ, not rec.juggling FAQ) but never
remembered seeing anything on binaries.
Given that I have a perfectly viable website, which I'd much rather post
to, I'll happily do that, I was just curious what would actually occur.

I'm not going to leave this up for very long, as it probably isn't
condoned by the powers that be: http://www.jugglethis.net/filemgmt/
singlefile.php?lid=40

It'll take at least an hour from the posting of this message to upload,
as I'm using most of my bandwidth at the moment for other stuff... like
playing CS! hehe

BTW, to all the rec.juggling oldbies, what happens if I try and post
binaries to this group? Do newservers know that it's not supposed to
have them, and thus automatically stop me? Maybe I should just try it
and see...

I don't think that was the file requested as it wasn't narated by Penn. The
line I remember was "And I'll be there if I don't get hit by a bus full of
juggling nuns...." or something like that.

Anyone have the one with Penn?

Go to http://www.jugglingdb.com/news/search.php and look up "Dick Franko" [1]

He insisted on posting binaries to rec.juggling back in the late 90's
and got a right slapping for it. Rightly so in my opinion.

Please see http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/misplacedbin.html for a very
reasonable and thorough discussion of why binaries should only be posted
to groups in the binaries heirachy.

Please also note that if you post a binary file through your newsreader,
people reading the group at the www.jugglingdb.com/news interface will
be unable to read it. [2]

A much better approach is to upload the file in question to some web space
and post the url here.

> Do newservers know that it's not supposed to

Some do, some don't. But it's a bad idea. Please read the above url
thoroughly for details of why it's a bad idea. It doesn't say a single
thing that I disagree with, and it covers almost every point that you
could possibly raise in defense of posting a binary to a non binary
group.

> Maybe I should just try it and see...

Please don't. It's terribly anti-social and I don't want to feel compelled
to bitch slap you at the next available opportunity. It would be bad for
my karma.
