A guy on rec.crafts.metalworking is selling a bunch of power hacksaw blades.
I thought some of you might be interested. Just don't buy all of them. I
want some :). Here's a copy of his post:

Note: I left out his email address because I feel bad posting someone elses
address w/o their permission- you can go to google groups and find his post
if you want it. The subject was "Any interest in power hacksaw blades".
------
I'm in Toronto here. I've got around 3000? bimetal powerhacksaw blades that
I want to get rid of. They vary in length from 12" to 24" long and width
from 5/8" to 2". T.P.I.'s in smaller blades are 10 or 14 and in the larger
sizes 4, 6 and 4-6 variable pitch.

I'm going to get back in the shop tomorrow to clean up the boxes and
inventory this stuff and stick 'em up real high where nobody will trip over
them for the next ten years but before I inventory them I'd thought I'd post
a message here to see if there is something you want (hopefully lots).
Anywhere in GTA is fine. I'll prolly put these on EBay sometime this
spring but for now just want to clean up. Looking for 1 to 3 dollars a
blade depending on the width but not interested in selling one or two at a
time.

BTW the majority of these blades are 18-4-1 (German standard?) chrome
vanadium or M42. Dunno if they'd be too brittle for certain applications or
not. Infact I was thinking of taking a stubby cobalt drill and try to drill
thru them with the press just to experiment (with fluid of course)

If you are interested in knowing quantities or what the inventory was send
me an email to --------------

HeadHunter.

Thanks for that Will. :)

I wonder if they really are all bi-metal with an HSS welded edge?
Is their use is pretty much limited to "hacksawing". ;)

Oh man he's got that last part all screwed up. :)

18-4-1 = 18%W-4%Cr-1%V ...a very early formulation for high speed
steel and now mostly refered to as T1. :)
(not german really, world-wide)

T4 is the same thing with 5%Co added.

M42 is 1.5%W 9.5%Mo 3.75%Cr 1.15%V 8%Co

"Chrome vanadium steel" is where the Cr and V (and understood that
carbon is an effective alloying agent) are the only real modifying
alloying agents other than carbon. Mn and Si are low enough as to
not effect the properties much either, let alone W or Ni.

I'm not sure I really -need- any more power hacksaw blades but
-tested for sure to be hard-backed- power hacksaw blades in any high
speed steel formulation that's strong enough to be used as a hacksaw
would be good to have at those prices. :)

I've got 2 "tungsten type HSS" power hacksaw blades and are prob'ly
T1 or something a little cheaper to make, but still close to T1.
(black and white Heller)

What we need to know before buying is brand names and paint colors
first, then a "file a notch in the back edge;) test" to be sure on
the ones that might pass.

Bi-metal ones are way to easy to get used, and for free even, to buy
them for knife making. The spring backs on the bi-metal blades I've
spark tested were pretty low in carbon like 4140 or something like
it. The only real use I've made of a bi-metal power hacksaw blade
was to drill and grind out a folding-hunter spring from it to match
the HSS blade I made. (don't have a picture of it yet;)

If you plan to do something like that, then all you need is one
bi-metal blade to match your hard-backed blade in thickness.

The ones I used were a two-tone-red Simonds and a Starrett
GreenStripe.

Alvin- Why is it that you can't use the bi-metal blades for a knife blade?
Is the HSS edge too thin to use? You may have mentioned this before, but I
can't remember.
