 | I have every sharpening gizmo known to man: crock sticks, the Lansky kit, the Spyderco sharpmaker, ez-lap diamond files, conventional stones, you name it. After killing a couple of hours with a number of ATS-34 and 1095 blades with only marginal results, I decided to get out from in front of the TV and go out to the shop where my $23 paper wheel setup is bolted to the bench. Three minutes later my whole handful of knives were 'scary sharp'.
I know you can't take it with you in the field, but I'm more convinced than ever that the paper sharpening wheel is the best sharpening system out there. I paid $18 for the wheels from Koval's and $5 for an arbor adapter from Lowe's. I salvaged an old motor from a washing machine and grafted a salvaged cord to it. I bolted the whole mess to the edge of my workbench and now all of my knives will pop the hair off your arm with just the lightest touch.
Just one man's opinion...

Agreed. What is old has become new again. 'Layed-up' wheels are ancient. The big thing the composite board makes possible is owning them cheap. My set-up is two pairs of the common wheels glued together to give a wider surface. I mounted them on extended mandrels to give me more clearance, and run them on a 3450 rpm motor. I use commercial frit, about 400 grit, and light red rouge for the polish; seems a good compromise for my uses. I have everything from a 2"x72" belt grinder to razor hones, and it's what I turn on most of the time.

Another agree.
I have found that a leather strop will make the edge even better. One of these days (I've been saying this for over a year now) I'm going to buy one of those 2x72 leather belts from handamerica - I hope to be awed by the edges it should produce. I'm not expecting it to be able to do better, just that it'll be so much faster that I won't say "OK, this is boring now, that's good enough".

Layed up wheels used to be made from leather- walrus hide was a favorite, as were hippo, rhino and water buffalo. The beautiful 'blue crocus' polish was done with walrus wheels. The French liked solid wooden wheels- same layed up kind of thing. Hard felt is another variation. A leather wheel is going to start above $50, probably- paper makes that commercially feasible.
