We are in the flight path of the local airport. This dude has fun but
sometimes I bet he scares himself.

I was watching him about 30 minutes ago, so I snapped this shot from my
porch. Then the wind picked up as he was heading southwest to the airfield.
He'd try to start down and the wind would pick up and lift him back up, all
the while he was swinging to and fro. It had to have been a wild ride. I
think I will stick to motorcycles. ;)

As amazing as it might seem, could very well be he was doing that on
purpose... These powered chutes can use lift almost as efficiently as a
sailplane... We ridge soar out at Dillingham Airfield here... They use
the L-19 Bird Dog as tow planes... Some days we get such good lift off
that ridge that the tow pilots will shut the engine off and sail the
ridge along with the sailplanes...

I was riding my old Savage out in the country NE of Austin about a year ago
and spotted a guy on an ultralight keeping a parallel course with me. I gave
him a wave, he gave me a thumbs-up and dropped a bit lower over the fields.
We cruised like that for a few miles before he peeled off, waggling his
wings. I hadn't seen another vehicle for about 30min before that happened
and the whole experience left me with a real feeling of freedom shared
equally, but in a different form.

(If that makes any sense at all...)

....somethin' about us motoring along, hugging the terrain- just at different
levels..... ahh, screw it- it's too hard to explain, ya had to be there,
it's really late, I need sleep, yadda-yadda-yadda.

Cool. How's the old Savage running? Just got off E-Bay an
'87 Intruder NOS seat set, will adapt for the '87 Savage to
cure the sore saddle syndrome. This set has buttons, seat is
in brown. Am thinking about a creme color or light beige
repaint during Spring.

Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a possible cam chain come
loose problem, no?

Don't hear much about that one, how does the Shadow VT600 VLX
ride?

I'll be able to say more if my carb problem gets sorted out this upcoming
week.....

The forks sure are soft, I've found that I hate chain final drive, and the
front disc is going to need replacing already at approx. 18K mi.

But, it's comfortable, the bars are almost perfect and it also gets around
50mpg- just like the Savage did.

I get more favorable comments on its appearance than I did on the Suzuki,
especially after I put new wide whites on it.

I personally kinda like the Savage more- maybe because I had a mental
picture of what it would look like when I was done mildly modifying it.

It was just such a clean, minimalistic bike. They're easy to find cheap,
though- so maybe I'll be back on one someday.

(although I'd sure like to experience more types of motorcycles in my
life... only these two and my brothers R75/5 so far, but I may be borrowing
an old 750 Nighthawk while mine's in the shop)

Runway (road) rash is enough, I don't think I'd like to add a
3rd dimension (height) to it.

I was thinking the same thing, while I watched him twisting in the wind. I
don't think leathers would be enough, unless you had a stack of them to
break your fall. LOL
