Sure! I make money with my plow. I just bolt it to the forks and charge
$150 to do local parking lots.

I commuted to work in Virginia through the snow on my '92 K75s... I
finally had to stop riding when I woke up one morning to a three foot
frozen solid snow drift blocking the bike in the shed... Fortunately I
had an '88 CRX Si at the time that was a LOT of fun in the snow...

I have. A looooong time ago on an RM80 off-road motorcycle.

> Comments?

Dang near killed myself. Hadn't ridden the bike in a while and when I went
for a "ride" the throttle stuck open at around 80%. Went a good 100' down a
hill before I realised it and must have been going at a good pace. Only way
to stop myself and not blow the 2-stroke engien up was the kill switch which
is almost impossible to hold in while you're careening from side to side
trying to stay alive... the snow just made it better in one sense - softer
landing if I crashed ... and worse in another - I couldn't really do much
to stop the bike from sliding even after the engine was off. Just prayed
lots and somehow got control.

I did, however have plenty of adrenaline left over to push teh bike back up
the hill. Never rode that bike again. Gave it away 2 years or so later...

Can't really be considered "snow" if you can still see the asphalt! :)

Yeah, I've never ridden in the snow; I guess it'd be more accurate to
say I've ridden while it was snowing. Each time, the snow was melting
as it hit the asphalt although it was sticking on the ground off road.

Probably a very wise idea... I've done some pretty stupid things in my
life (as opposed to crazy things)[1] and riding on snow covered streets
is one of them...

[1] Crazy = Riding while it is snowing. Stupid = Riding while it is
snowing and the snow is covering the road[2]...

[2] ...on a street bike not outfitted for such riding...

I've had a couple of snow riding experiences. My first was
on a dirt bike with a busted throttle. It was locked on
WFO, and speed control was managed through flicking the
kill switch on and off. Tonnes of fun in the snow.

I've also ridden my sportbike in the snow. Or rather, the
first and last 100 feet of my commute was in the snow. The
rest of the roads were pretty much clear, and icy patches
were plainly visible. It was cold. On the plus side,
NOBODY cut me off, tailgated me, or in any way shape or
form even LOOKED like they were going to encroach on my
road space. I guess I suddenly became VERY visible. I did
this for about a week.

Spring snow in Gallup/Grants is not unusual. Both are at
about 6,500 ft elevation, Continental Divide between them is
around 7,000 ft. By the time you get to Winslow AZ at around
5,000 ft, things settle down until Flagstaff at around 8,000.

The part between Grants and Gallup sometimes gets icy while it
is snowing. You can tell it is bad when the truckers are
moving along at 15 - 25 mph.

Yes, tried it once, on a Honda CM 400 back in late 80s in Virginia. The
snow didn't bother me once I got out of town and on the hiway, but in
town, the stuff had packed down and melted and refroze at intersections.
Coming to one redlight, I had slowed down to almost a stop when the
back tire found one of those patches and slid. Luckily I was only doing
about 1-2 MPH at the time and was able to step off the bike as it went
down and slid about 20 ft to the line. I picked up the bike (it was
still running), the light turned green, and I headed onto the hiway
where the snow wasn't packed and there was no ice under it for the 25
mile ride home.

Those CM400's seem indestructable.

Aint that the truth. I bought it used from a friend who had owned it
for several years and had bought it used. I sold it to another friend
after owning it for almost 2 years. A year later he sold it to someone
else who kept it for 2 or 3 years, who sold it to someone else who had
it for another year or 2, I bought it again and kept it for a couple of
years, and sold it again. This was in the early 90's. Last time I was
back in that area last year, that bike was still running, after having
been sold 5 or 6 more times (all owners were friends of Jimmy K, for
those of you who know who Jimmy K is).

You would be surprised how well the seemingly slick tires of a sportbike
can grip the snow. I found it odd that I was passing cars in two
inches. The problem I had was snow is not soft and puffy as it seems,
but like from a sandblaster at highway speeds. Since the snow
accumulated on my visor in seconds, I needed to have it up to see. My
eyeballs were brutally sore and scratched until the next day.

Then there is the problem of snow filling up the wheels and unbalancing
them. Snow makes for quite a fun ride.

Two years ago I had to meet up with a friend to lead him to our shop.
The roads were slick with snow, sleet and hail with temps around 20F.

So I'm waiting in the parking lot of a chinese restaurant, and here
comes my friend on his rat Kawa 500. He comes up the driveway of the
parking lot sliding similar to what you would see a skier doing,
stopping parallel to my bumper with about 3 feet to spare. He followed
me through 5 miles of hilly, winding roads to the shop with no problem.

Unfortunately this bike is temporarily disassembled as he is still
trying to mate an ATV rear end to it. I'll try to find the pictures I
have of the project.

Two...
The last time my family moved back to Fairbanks Alaska was in September of 1969.
We moved into a trailer with a wannagin (addition) without water. My dad
promptly went out and bought three motorcycles, a Honda 350 Scrambler, a Suzuki
TC200, and a Honda Trail 90. It snows around the first week of October there so
there was not much riding before the snow set in. Fortunately we had a warm
spell during Christmas vacation where it actually got up to around 32F, 0C. I
took the TC200 out or a ride and had a lot of fun. All you had to do was
remember to lift your feet when the bike went out from under you and hold on to
the clutch. You'd slide to a stop smooth as can be on the packed snow covered
road

In the spring the roads were dry but the fields were still snow covered. Some
friends and I took a snow machine trail in field that was a dirt air strip in
the summer. That was OK, but having the front wheel break though the snow up to
its axle would just about put you over the handlebars.

yep. it's fun on a dual sport. it's a hoot on a dirtbike. it's scary as
hell on a sportbike.

it's probably impossible on a cruiser. :-)
