Drove my 1990 Chevy 454SS pickup (with original 16-year-old BF Goodrich Comp
T/A's) in the first snow of the season, a little over an inch, last week. Most
deadly thing I've ever wielded in the snow. 385 ft-lbs of torque at 1500rpm, a
cast iron big block up front, 2WD, and nothing in the back, all consipred to
have the thing threatening to swap ends every time I took my foot off the brake.

So, with the prediction of 8-12 inches of snow for this weekend, I ordered,
received, and mounted a set of 4 Bridgestone Winter Dueler snow tires on the
truck, and bought eight 40-pound bags of top soil for the wife's spring garden,
loaded them in the back of the truck, and filled up the fuel tank.

The snow came - not 8-12 inches, but a good six inches, which went (as usual)
unplowed on the last two streets leading to my house. No problemo, my friend.
Because that 454SS has been TRANSFORMED. It thinks it's a snow CAT, for
goodness sakes. I'll tell you what... I've put pure snows on my son's Miata,
and I put them on my 2wd GMC Sierra pick-up, and now, after witnessing what
they've done on *this* truck, you couldn't TRADE me 4wd for these tires. No
way. They are, simply, astonishing.

A Geo with studs beats a 4WD F250 with semi-bald tires any day. As long as I
can stay out of their trajectory...

I'm running some studded "snowtrakkers" on the Jetta, it sticks better than
either of my 4x4s on the road. I keep the aux tank filled for extra weight
in winter.

I can't wait to ditch the rim protectors that came on my
Subaru, and pick up a set of dedicated winter and summer
tires. I've had dedicated snows on every vehicle I've
owned. The initial price is high for an extra set of rims
and tires, but they last more seasons, and offer a MASSIVE
improvement in performance. AWD + Snow tires in the snow =
loads of fun.

Was similar down here in Southern MD, maybe 3-4 inches, except of course
that the power went off around 9 AM came back for a short while around 6 PM
then gone again until 8 PM. Internet/CATV out for an additional 2 hours.
We did OK since I have a partial generator backup. Had heat, water, some
lights, microwave and the entertainment center.

Turns out that though I live 10 miles from Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power
Plant, SMECO brings the power for this area from St Marys County via an
submerged cable. Have to wonder about that kind of design and engineering.

I stopped by the Baltimore show on Friday. In addition to 50 vendors
selling doorags and beanies there was a guy selling backup power systems for
homes. He could have sold a few in my neighborhood today.

The bikes are quiet, hibernating under their winter covers, but this PMS is
kicking my butt. COG Crab Cakes ride is in a 8 weeks. Not sure I can wait
that long.
