this was in the local paper ... it seems nudists = nutters = not welcome.

highlights include:

"When Mr Jones sought a permit from Randwick Council to have participants
ride from Randwick to Maroubra, he insisted there 'would be no nudity
allowed, pointing to rule number one: "All riders must wear Speedos or brief
bikini bottoms as a bare minimum."

"I believe it will attract all the nutters out there, the nudists, and I
think it's totally inappropriate to have naked people riding on bikes in our
city" Labor councillor Chris Bastic

Councillors blow cold air on half-naked bike ride.
Report MENIOS CONSTANTINOU

Charity events are among the least contentious items that come before a
council. But then not many fundraisers involve a group of half-naked men and
women riding around on bicycles.

On February 13, cyclists will don a G-string and slap on some body paint for
the inaugural Sydney Body Art Ride, a colourful bike journey from Randwick
to Maroubra beach.

The event is a fundraiser for the Children's Cancer Institute, and the ride
will be led by a group of celebrities who have pledged their support.

The organiser, Jake Lloyd-Jones, thinks he can break the world body-painting
record of 254.

It may sound harmless enough, but some Randwick councillors beg to differ.

When Mr Jones sought a permit from Randwick Council to have participants
ride from Randwick to Maroubra, he insisted there 'would be no nudity
allowed, pointing to rule number one: "All riders must wear Speedos or brief
bikini bottoms as a bare minimum."

Labor councillor Chris Bastic objected to "nude bike-riding through our
city".

"I believe it will attract all the nutters out there, the nudists, and I
think it's totally inappropriate to have naked people riding on bikes in our
city," he said.

Greens mayor Murray Matson and his Liberal deputy, Bruce Notley-Smith,
defended the event, pointing to some of the celebrity supporters.

"I'd like to point out that [NSW Premier] Bob Carr is one of the
supporters," Cr Notley-Smith said.

Some other people listed as "registered celebrities" are Cr Matson, Waverley
mayor Peter Poscatt, ABC TV presenter Maxine McKew, and several high-profile
journalists.

Mr Jones was given official approval and a grant of funds from the council.

I still haven't really figured out what the permit was for. As best I
can tell, a bunch of people can ride bicycles along the road anyway. The
only problem areas apear to relate to riding through a public park,
which they didn't have to do, and going on to the beach at the end, ditto.

About the only constitutionally protected right we have in Australia is
political speech. Apart from that, we're slaves. I'll have to think of
something equally defamatory to say about Chris Bastic, and somewhere
appropriate to stick it.

Sylvia.
