NYC: "New York City Council Decides to Hold Pets in Housing Bill (Int.
189-A) for Further Consideration in 2005

New York City Council Committee on Housing and Buildings Holds Pets in
Housing Bill for further Consideration in 2005.

On December 14th, the Committee on Housing and Buildings by a 7-4 vote
in favor of Int. 189-A, decided to hold the legislation for further
amendments in 2005. The Committee was scheduled to vote the bill out
of committee that day, and forward it to the full Council for passage
on December 15th. An “11th hour” reversal came after a renewed
campaign by representatives of the real estate industry and continued
reservations by some members of the committee.

The legislation, which already has undergone several amendments, would
limit which tenants are allowed to have a companion animal, and the
number of animals harbored. It would protect only pet owners
previously covered under the “3 month law,” and would restrict the
person to get a “replacement” pet(s) up to the number of animals
he/she had when covered under the law, and only of the same species.

The ASPCA will continue to work with the New York City Council on Int.
189-A in the New Year. If you or someone you know lives in New York
City and you have not yet written your council person on this
important legislation, please click here:

and you can do so, compliments of the ASPCA. We will keep you abreast
of any developments as they unfold.

Thank you for your help.
