A paper by Chang-Seok Kim, Young-Geun Han, Jin U. Kang, Bernard Choi, and J. Stuart Nelson, in issue 24 of volume 12 of Optics Express describes the use of an electro-optic modulator inside a Sagnac loop interferometer. So, apparently it can be done.
Since a Sagnac loop *is* an interferometer, of course, if you do use anything inside the loop to modulate the intensity of the interfering beam, you must be sure that you are not disturbing the phase of the beam that you are modulating.
Other than these very simple and general comments, though, I do not have sufficient expertise in this field to be of any _real_ help.
