Just came back from a walk round the 'lake'. I took with me the remains of a
stale loaf for the ducks. Admittedly it's a wee while since I remembered to
take any bread with me.

Usually there is a vast melée of Mallards, with a ring of disconsolate
Tufted Ducks just out of reach of the food (and the distance I can throw a
scrap of bread).

Today the Tufties were right in among the Mallards, fighting alongside them
and getting their share of the bread.

I am now wondering whether this is result of the wintry weather, or the
culmination of a learning process. Any ideas, anyone?

The trouble with questions like this is that unless someone has
done a study into the ducks' behaviour with controlled samples
then there is absolutely no way of knowing the answer.

Perhaps you should teach yourself Tufteese and then ask them! ;)

Nope. But if you squeeze the bread to make it sink, Tufties will dive under
the other birds (Mute Swans, Canada Geese etc. that deter ducks) to get it.

Ah. That's a useful tip. Thank you, John.
