ECODUCT REFERENDUM - SOESTERBERG, HOLLAND
(19 January 2005)

Tomorrow Wednesday 19 January 2005 a referendum on an ecoduct will be
held in the township of Soest (45.000 inhabitants).
Nature clubs and local and provincial governments have launched
a plan
to restore the ecological links between several parts of the 50 km long
National Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug, in the vicinity of the city of
Utrecht. The construction of several ecoducts across motorways and
railroads are planned in coming years.
The construction cost of this particular ecoduct of E 21 million
will
be financed with the revenue generated with the development of a
business park and 400 houses adjacent to an existing urban area.
A local citizens' group has called for a corrective referendum
in the
city of Soest. They consider it as an expensive, prestigious
ecological project. Website of the pro and contra groups are shown
below.
Opinion polls show a possible high voter turnout of 60%.
