Funding

Councillor Donald Anderson (Letters, 13 January) confirms your earlier
report that the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, has given England extra council
tax funding of £1 billion while Scotland is getting £76 million, ie 7.6 per
cent of the English sum. How does this square with the Barnett formula? Or
have we been misled all along about the alleged Scottish "subsidy"?

Frae Auld Bob Peffers:
Do you speak for yourself, Robert? I was reliably informed that in your case
the Scotch percentage was somewhat higher. In my own case I never drink any
and have not done so for nearly 50 years. If fact I know many Scots,
throughout Scotland, who also never drink Scotch.

It's about 8.6 on the 2001 census figures.

And at the very least an admission from yourself that Barnett isn't
"generous" but proportional. Saved for future reference.

Ah, an admission that Scotland is only getting her fair share, then. Taking
into account the last census that showed Scotland's population to be nearly
9% of the UK, it's an admissiont that Scotland is getting *less* than her
fair share!

You realise, Rab, that you'll be hit over the head with your admission every
time you now talk about Scotland being subsidised!
