Sectarian parades ruin Glasgow's image

Your Letters January 20 2005

I entirely agree with the sentiments of your leader, Drum out the bigotry
(January 19). For too long, participants in sectarian marches have held
Glasgow and its rebirth as a cosmopolitan, enterprising, vibrant city as a
hostage to fortune. The peculiar ritual that I have never quite understood
has been a thorn in the side of progress for many years. Glasgow is a great
place to live and work, but as long as these types of "parades" are allowed
to continue under the existing outdated legislation, we will never surpass
the final hurdle that will certify us as a fair, tolerant, peaceful and just
society. Glasgow City Council recently re-branded our city "Scotland with
Style". I hope that that the "style" they refer to does not consist of an
orange sash, bowler hat and a large drum.

Stuart Donaldson, 3 Cordiner Street, Glasgow.

Parkheed and Ibrox twice a year was enough for me. Funny thing is though,
that Parkhead prepared me for living in South Africa where whenever you park
your car, a gentleman offers to watch it for you. I always want to tell them
to sod orf but I always think of the story I was told about by a fellow
Jambo who took his car to Parkhead once. He was approached by a couple of
lads who offered to watch his car for 50p while he was at the game. The
Jambo pointed to his big Alsation in the back seat and said 'don't worry, he
watches my car.'
'Fair enough' said the young shell-suits.
After the game, the Jambo returned to his car to find all four tyres flat
and a sign under the window wiper saying 'can your dug blow up tyres?'

Many of the Border families used to run a deal like that back in the
1300s to 1600s. If you paid your protection money (called "black
mail:) , you might lose stock once in a while. If you didn't, you
would come home some day to find one of your children hanged on a
tree, Again you were asked for your "blackmail". If you continued to
refuse, your entire family died one by one on a regular basis until it
was your turn.

A good example of how much in need of a firm English hand were the

Frae Auld bob Peffers:
Except, of course, that those large borders families actually spanned the
border and there were probably as many of them living on the English side as
were on the Scottish side. What is more the actual border position moved up
and down throughout the years. Sometimes the border was up around Edinburgh
and sometimes it was as far south as Teesside. Henderson is, once more in
error. Perhaps he is in dire need of his medical helpers again? Does anyone,
besides himself, have any contact data for his ever present doctor and
nurse? Mind you, it has occurred to me that they may be a figment of his
turbid imagination.

We've played about with the "firm English hand" before, haven't we?

Frae Auld Bob Peffers:
Och No! Madra Dubh, While you and I have no need to repeat these things, ad
infinitum. You have to understand that Robert Henderson is what is classed
as, "A compulsive"
It is a sad, sad, affliction and we must make allowances for the poor
sufferers.

This especially in Robert Henderson's case, for he has a whole raft of such
afflictions. not least that which sees him regularly speak with an
imaginary doctor and nurse.

There is, though, an even more sad interpretation of this evidence of his
speaking to these two medical people - they may - God forbid- actually exist
and Robert Henderson is under 24/7 supervision by the two, oft mentioned,
practitioners.

And of course of the firm Scottish hand that it has since been found
necessary to clamp on mindlesslty savage English necks today.

Look at your own example, Henderson. Attacking the Prime Minister!
Outrageous! No one in this group has ever done such a thing. No, it
took you, a turncoat and traitor to your own people to do the
unthinkable and attack a Scottish Prime Minister. Thank God people in
*ngland are too bloody ignorant to know that Henderson is a Scottish
name so that we are embarrassed by you. They believe us when we tell
them you're German.
