Thank you for the suggestions. I sure wish it could be done with something that inexpensive but it can't. The #44-233a isn't powerful enough. DLT IV tapes require a much stronger magnetic field to completely erase them back to a virgin state.
The drives saturate the magnetic particles on the tape with a very strong field. The thin film head in the DTL 1 drive can't generate a strong enough field to complete erase the tape. It requires something like 3-5 times the magnetic field that is generated by a bulk eraser designed to do audio tapes or floppies.
