the unmoderated atheism groups are practically unreadable due to the OT
and spam, yet there is some legitimate traffic there. would it be
worthwhile to try and direct the participants there to a moderated group
like this one?

In theory maybe. In practice, little of what is discussed on those
groups would be on topic here, where the subject at hand is atheism in
society. The "in society" part is most of what the moderation is
about. Any on topic discussion we would be more than happy to have
here, but general discussion of atheism is typically kept to a
minimum.

What is OT? Who moderates this group?

OT is an acronym for "off topic". This group is primarily moderated
by me, though there are two to three other moderators on the team.
Unfortunately, they have not actively approved or rejected a posting
in many, many months. Most posters are not moderated, as their
addresses have been preapproved. Only new and problematic posters
have their submissions held for manual approval.
