Do we? I thought that Christians considered the Old Testament still
valid...

"Christian America"? Exactly where in the Constitution did you read that
definition? The US of A were never established as a Christian nation: the
Founding Fathers were mostly Deists and Freemasons (have a look at a
dollar bill: plenty of masonic imagery). The Treaty of Tripoli (1796)
makes the independence between state and religion very clear:
