Brand Bengal attracts IT firms from Singapore

KOLKATA: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's 'Look East' mantra is
finding takers. And they include Singapore-based IT firms, normally
considered very picky.

A business delegation from three of Singapore's most promising software
companies is undertaking a scouting mission to Kolkata on February 2 to
see how it can profit from Bengal's infotech boom. The contingent from
SES, CrimsonLogic and CET Technologies is slated to hold meetings with
the IT department, Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Kolkata Port Trust,
police commissioner and the state home secretary during their two-day
trip.

A meeting with CII officials is also on the agenda of the delegation,
which would include a representative of the Infocomm Development
Authority of Singapore. IT secretary G.D. Gautama said the trip was
further proof of Bengal's progress up the IT ladder.

"Such visits definitely suggest that we are making good progress. Why
would so many important business people make such a trip to Kolkata if
they did not see some value coming out of it?" Gautama asked.

CII eastern region chairman Ravi Poddar said, "There is a buzz in
Singapore about Bengal at the moment sparked of by the decision of one
of the biggest IT park developers of that country, Ascendas, to
establish a base in Kolkata... These trips will only gain momentum in
the days ahead," he said.
