I have checked my various indexes for Rokewood and I can't find a burial
or mention of either Granny Base or the Holesworthy family.

Hi Dianne.

Eliza "Granny" BASE died in May 3, 1915 and was buried the next day in the
Ballarat New Cemetery. Incidentally, Charles HOLDSWORTH was buried in Cape
Clear in 1923 and also his wife Bertha in 1959.

Also, for those following my inept attempts at tracking this bunch, the
Electoral Roles from 1903 through to 1922 put Charles and family in
"Rokewood Junction" for all that time. However, this isn't specific to an
address. It has been suggested that the "Sands & McDougall" directory may
be of assistance. I'm not entirely sure what that is, or where to get my
hands on it but I'll try the State Library in Melbourne first. The Rolls
also place Eliza living in Rokewood Junction up to and including 1914, so
she could not have been in the Benevolent Asylum more than a year. As
someone else pointed out, Eliza was not in a lunatic asylum, but more of a
nursing home. This may explain why I cannot find Eliza in the Ballarat
Asylum records held in the PROV. Wrong asylum, maybe. Investigations
continue.....

I'll put another query here: The Probate Office said that there may have
been a Power of Attourney made for Eliza. She would have had some assets at
some point. The PROV may have records to that effect, but they asked that I
find out a bit more about who was running the Asylum at that point in time.
This will give them a name to look for. It is likely that it was government
run and that the Asylum itself had Power of Attourney, in which case, the
PROV will have a record for it (if it happened). So does anyone out there
know some of the history of the top of their head?

I'll write off to the Queen Elizabeth Home/Center in Ballarat anyway. All
good stuff!!! :)

Thankyou to all who have been helping me, it is much appreciated and I am
learning heaps.

Toodles.

Ken Worland,
Melbourne, Australia.

A Business & Personal Directory commenced in 1857 as Sands & Kenny.
In 1861 became Sands & McDougall.
Finished in 1974.
Available in MANY Council & Genie Libraries.
However not incomplete set.
BIG book to abut a foot deep. very heavy.
Also available in FICHE form at many libraries.
Of course the year s quoted as they were always a year behind.
Poor sods had no PC s to use & had to do it by hand.

P.S. Country areas did not get an entry until about 1902.
