For 300 years, the Spaniards brutally forced the Filipinos to think and
behave like Mediterranean Europeans. And it worked! Filipinos have
totally lost their true Asian identity. Only another 300 years of
forceful brutality can you bring back the true Asian identity of
Filipinos. Maybe that was one of the intentions of the Japanese
imperial forces during WWII? However, the Spaniards were not able to
conquer a few pagan and Muslim tribe minorities of the Philippines.
The Spanish forces were no match for their fierceness and familiarity
of their mountainous jungle terrains. During US annexation of the
Philippines, Christian missionaries tried to convert those few
non-christianized tribes. Some were converted some not and those who
resisted American rule, like the Native Americans, were given the iron
hand. Despite of the figures of casualties during the Philippine
American war, you got to understand that the brutality of Spanish rule
was still fresh on the minds of Filipinos. Therefore, Filipinos in
their point of view saw American rule as paradise. The US initiated PR
projects like building schools, hospitals, railways, etc to woo the
Filipino civilians. And because majority of the Philippine tribes
being already Mediterranean Europeanized and no longer Asians, the
US' governance of the Philippines was easier than their dealings with
the Native Americans or maybe even present day Iraq. I mean because
Filipinos were already previously Mediterranean Europeanized by the
Spaniards, most Filipino tribes no longer have a fierce warrior culture
like the Native Americans and pagan and Muslim Filipino tribe
minorities. Through education, the US educated the Filipinos to think
and behave like Western Anglo Saxon Protestants (WASP). And it worked!
Today the US census and other Asian-American statistical data indicate
that among the Filipino-American population in the US,
Filipino-Americans who are college graduates outnumber those
Filipino-Americans who didn't finish college. I guess it says that
most Filipino-American adults are college graduates and most
Filipino-Americans who are not college graduates are those who are
still toddlers, children, and high school students. The rate of
achievement of most Filipinos in America surpasses those of the
Filipinos in the Philippines because Filipino-Americans have fluent
learning access to books because the native language of the Filipinos
in America is English and all books sold in the US are written in
English. In the Philippines it's a tragedy, most essential books
sold in the Philippines (like encyclopedias, math, science, etc) are
written in English but greater majority of Filipinos in the Philippines
don't know how to speak, read, and write English. The Philippine
government have not yet translated all those medium of knowledge to the
native languages of the Philippines so how can majority of Filipinos be
able to learn and empower themselves to help improve their country if
they can't read and absorb those wealth of knowledge? Even genius
people need to take a peek on a book for reference from time to time,
what more for average majority of people? Only those who can afford to
send their child to private schools which regularly force their
students to exercise to speak, read, and write in English round the
clock can have a bright future in the Philippines because being able to
read most books sold in the Philippines that are written in English.
But anyway, I think even some public schools are now imitating the
private schools' teaching of English. But don't get me wrong, I
have no problem with eliminating the English language in the
Philippines as long as the Philippine government translates all mediums
of the knowledge to the native languages, because the important thing
is fluent learning access to essential modern knowledge. As they say,
knowledge is power.
