A RUSSIAN priest was shot dead in the hallway of his apartment block in the Moscow region after he criticised the behaviour of a group of drunken men. The killer "shot the Orthodox priest Alexander Filippov, who came out of his apartment into the hallway to admonish a group of drunk men who were breaching public order", the investigative committee of prosecutors said. The men were "answering a call of nature", Filippov's widow told the Interfax news agency. A suspect with a previous conviction for murder was detained by police hours later, the investigative committee said. Filippov, 39, served as a priest in the village of Satino-Russkoye and had three daughters. "Such evil simply beggars belief, when a person is a victim of open, blatant malevolence," the head of the Synodal information department of the Russian Orthodox Church, Vladimir Legoida, said. The shooting in the Moscow region town of Podolsk came just over a month after a Russian Orthodox priest who received death threats for outspoken statements on Islam was shot in his Moscow church by a masked gunman.
