Police are searching an apartment block in London for clues surrounding the
suspected plot to blow up a United States passenger plane.

A 23-year-old Nigerian man has been charged with trying to blow up a packed
aeroplane as it descended toward the US city of Detroit on Christmas Day, US
officials say.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, is charged with attempting to destroy the
aircraft and with placing a destructive device on the plane, the Justice
Department said in a statement.

"This alleged attack on a US airplane on Christmas Day shows that we must remain
vigilant in the fight against terrorism at all times," said Attorney General
Eric Holder.

"Had this alleged plot to destroy an aeroplane been successful, scores of
innocent people would have been killed or injured.

"We will continue to investigate this matter vigorously, and we will use all
measures available to our government to ensure that anyone responsible for this
attempted attack is brought to justice," the statement read.

Abdulmutallab is due to appear in court in the US later on Saturday (local time).

The search in Britain is focused on a basement in a block in central London
where apartments sell for between $3 million and $4 million dollars.

Scotland Yard has confirmed that it is involved in the investigation into claims
that Abdulmutallab, who studied in Britain, tried to blow up the transatlantic
plane.

Abdulmutallab, who is believed to be linked to Al Qaeda militants, was
overpowered by passengers and crew as he ignited what looked like fireworks on
the Christmas Day flight.

Abdulmutallab is said to have boarded KLM flight 588 in Lagos, Nigeria bound for
Amsterdam.

There he connected to Delta Northwest Airlines 253 heading for Detroit. The
Delta plane was carrying 278 people.

The man was believed to have spent time in Britain as a student and authorities
were trying to establish details about his activities in the country, a British
counter-terrorism source said.

University College London (UCL) said a student by the name of Umar Farouk
Abdulmutallab was enrolled on a mechanical engineering course between September
2005 and June 2008 but said it had no evidence this individual was the same man.

A report said the suspect had attended the British International School in Togo,
where he had been nick-named "Alfa" - a local term for an Islamic scholar -
before going to London to study.

Banker's son

Abdulmutallab is the son of a prominent Nigerian former banker.

"It is my brother," Abdul Mutallab, son of Umaru Mutallab, a prominent banker
from the northern state of Katsina, said.

Nigeria's This Day newspaper cited family members as saying Umaru Mutallab had
been uncomfortable with his son's "extreme religious views" and had reported him
to the US Embassy in the capital Abuja and to Nigerian security agencies six
months ago.

The This Day report said Umaru Mutallab would meet Nigerian security agencies on
Saturday (local time).

"He is in a meeting right now but I don't think he is meeting with the police
yet," Abdul Mutallab said, but declined to comment further.

Meanwhile, one of the passengers onboard the flight who tackled Abdulmutallab as
he tried to detonate the explosives says the man remained calm and did not say a
word during the entire incident.

Jasper Schuringa was onboard the flight from Amsterdam when he heard a popping
noise and smelt smoke.

He was sitting across the aisle from Abdulmutallab.

"And then I took some kind of object that was already melting and smoking out of
him and I tried to put out the fire and then when I did that I was also
restraining the suspect and then the fire started beneath his seat," he said.

The FBI is still questioning Abdulmutallab, but the White House believes he was
operating alone.

Airport security has been boosted across the US and Europe for domestic and
international flights after the incident.
