in all four feet followed by abscesses in both front hooves is doing very well. We treated both front feet with Clean Trax. ( http://www.ericnystrom.com/cleantrax.html ) Although Joy's insulin level was still within the normal range, the vets all agree that she fits the profile of an IR/EMS (Insulin resistance/equine metabolic syndrome) horse. At this point she does not have Cushings. On restricted feed and the Smartpak IR supplement she is losing weight. She is on the NSAIS Previcox. Her digital x-rays showed no significant rotation or sinking so I have the go ahead to ride her. Since her hooves are otherwise in excellent condition, the vet believes that Joy has an excellent chance of remaining sound with good management. FWIW, the vet who x-rayed her was amazed that Joy is 24. He and his tech could not get over how healthy she looks ('cept for being fat). They thought she looked fantastic for a 20 year old horse, so when I reminded them of her actual age their jaws dropped. :-) Dawn JL happy to report a good outcome Other posts: |
