In a speech about good policy based on good science, Mr Rees said it was important not to ignore the messages scientists were giving about the environment. ''The threat of climate change is catastrophic. In fact, the current wave of climate change scepticism smacks of 1930s-style appeasement: 'Hide under the blankets and it will go away'. But it won't go away.' "As Nicholas Stern reported three years ago, that approach only invites catastrophe. "On the other hand it is not surprising that the first senior world leader to take climate change seriously was Margaret Thatcher, a chemist by training who read the evidence in the early '80s and immediately understood its dire consequences. "The fact that we are still debating the issue almost 30 years later shows how poor science literacy can make for poor public policy. "When scientists said we should ban thalidomide because it was causing horrific birth defects, we didn't have a 30-year debate. "We didn’t have a 30-year debate to ban CFCs. We acted and we acted quickly once appropriate scientific evidence was available. "Science transformed human life in the 20th century.
