Pusillanimous?

We lost a couple of IMPs on a deal where I had the following:

Q8643
AT
J754
K4

Still sitting South, however, this time East dealt and we were
vulnerable against non-vulnerable opponents.

Our auction went as follows:
E S W N
1D P 1NT P
P P

1D = 3+ diamonds
1NT = 6-9 HCP

I didn't find this anemic spade suit good enough for an overcall. When
1NT was passed to me I didn't find the courage to bid 2S.
Pusillanemous? (BTW: I've learnt the word 'pusillanimous' from this
forum..)

Would you prefer a 1S overcall or a 2S balancing action?

Reint.
